Although we started as a natural skincare company, our main focus is to provide natural alternatives to conventional products and to allow the switch to be as easy as possible.

Today we're focusing on soy-wax candles and how they differ from the conventional store bought ones. Regular candles are predominantly made of paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product that's created from the sludge waste when crude oil is refined into gasoline. By burning these candles, we release many toxic chemicals into the air and slowly increase the CO2 levels within our atmosphere.

When burned, paraffin wax releases highly toxic carcinogenic agents including benzene and toluene. Toluene directly effects the central nervous system and can lead to symptoms of fatigue, sleepiness, headaches, and nausea. Constant exposure to these carcinogens can cause damage to the brain, lungs, central nervous system, and can lead to developmental difficulties as well.

Additionally, petro-soot from paraffin candles is often compared to soot from the exhaust of a diesel engine. It's considered to be just as dangerous as second hand smoke, and can cause a range of symptoms and sensitivities in our body.

While soy candles look and smell similar to their paraffin counterparts, they offer some pretty distinct advantages from their fellow friends.

For starters, soy-wax is made from the oil of soybeans which makes it a natural vegetable wax. Their plant-based source allows them to be non-toxic and natural, meaning no chemicals or carcinogenic agents are being released when they burn. By making the switch to soy, you'll automatically eliminate the exposure to carcinogenic chemicals and toxic air agents via candles. After all, who wants those anyways?

Another advantage is that soy-wax candles will provide a longer and cleaner burn due to the biodegradability of the wax. This means less frequent purchases will be required and the candle will burn to the bottom, revealing an empty container at the end.

Lastly, soy-wax candles are scented using essential oils not chemical fragrances. The term fragrance on an ingredients list usually represents a complex cocktail of chemicals which can trigger a range of symptoms in our body. The combination of these chemicals can act as endocrine disruptors, meaning they have the ability to interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse effects through out the body. By eliminating fragrances and switching to plant-based essential oils, we can say goodbye to the numerous headaches, flare-ups and allergy irritations that are often caused by these chemicals.

Simply putting it, natural soy-wax is better for you. It's more suitable for the environment, less-harmful for your body, and it creates a better performing product- which is really important to us! If you're looking for a more natural alternative to the conventional store bought candles, try making this simple switch. I'm sure you'll feel soy-much better.
